HATBORO-HORSHAM EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION
"ABOUT LIFE" Location: Hatboro-Horsham High School, 899 Horsham Rd., Horsham 19044 Time: 7:30 p.m. Tickets: Free and open to all. No tickets are needed. Jeff Yalden, Youth Motivational Speaker Featured On Mtv, kicks Off Hhef Programs For Students And Community Sept. 30.
When Jeff Yalden speaks, people listen. So say those who have seen and heard him, and so hopes the Hatboro-Horsham Educational Foundation which is bringing the award-winning, internationally renowned youth motivational speaker to the community Sept. 30 to discuss a topic short in title but long on value. Yalden will present "About Life," to Hatboro-Horsham High School's 1,700 students in two daytime sessions, and at 7:30 that night will address the community on parenting and relationship-building with teenagers. The evening session, to be held at the high school, 899 Horsham Road, Horsham, is free and open to all. No tickets are needed. "With teenagers, I cover everything," he said, "Choices, respect, responsibility, character, doing the right thing. Teenagers are searching for meaning in life and looking for understanding and direction." One of the most requested youth speakers in the world - he's a former teacher and coach, ex-U.S. Marine, an author and teen life coach - the father of two teenage daughters mixes comedy (he believes comedy and laughter establish a connection), stories (he discusses his own challenges), emotion (he helps students explore their own psyches and self-esteem) and awakening (he assists students in finding life's purposes and possibilities). "I talk to the kids in their language and at their level," said the Sagamore Beach, MA-based Yalden, 39, who's been featured on MTV's "Made." "I want to make sense to them so as they walk away they say, 'this dude just makes sense.'" Yalden's story is that of a struggling teen - he received just 600 out of a possible 1,600 on his SATs and finished 128th in a high school class of 133 - who became a successful teen coach and speaker. He has worked with teens and parents for 15 years, and has appeared in all 50 United States and in 48 countries. Hatboro-Horsham High School Principal Dennis Williams sought to have Yalden visit the district as the "perfect kickoff" to a new school year. "It will have long-lasting effects on students, parents and staff," he said. "There is clearly a need for this type of message in our current society." Teenagers are under more stress than ever, said Williams. "The type of choices that students are forced to make, the level of influence that society has on their everyday lives is far greater than it was just 10 years ago." Yalden said it's a matter of "making sense" rather than "tough love" in relating to teens. "Kids have trouble developing a purpose," he said. "And parents have trouble because their kids aren't motivated." Yalden's appearance is the first program in the Hatboro-Horsham Educational Foundation 2010-2011 season. HHEF is a nonprofit organization created to encourage excellence, and to enhance and enrich educational opportunities for Hatboro-Horsham students. "We have remained true to our goal of focusing on programs that are integrally connected to the school district's curriculum and synchronized with programs already taking place in the schools this year," said Laurie Rosard, HHEF executive director "We believe that following this approach results in the greatest impact on our students, while involving our community at large as well." HHEF's program lineup this academic year includes:
