Table sponsorships also are available. Sponsors: The Greater Hatboro and the Greater Horsham Chambers of Commerce.
Area residents and business people will have two opportunities Oct. 15 to hear the message of author and businessman Sean Covey whose mission is to "inspire greatness in youth" and give them the skills they need for the 21st century workforce.
The Hatboro-Horsham Educational Foundation is bringing Covey to Horsham for a day of activities designed to engage teachers, administrators, parents, the business community - and the students themselves - in strategies to create schools where "everyone's a leader" and where skills beyond the "3Rs" are honed. Covey will speak at a special luncheon for the business and civic community, held in conjunction with the Greater Hatboro and Greater Horsham chambers of commerce, at 11:30 a.m. at the Manor House at Commonwealth National Golf Club, 300 Tournament Drive, Horsham. Covey will discuss today's changing world, its new set of rules and how to help create a pool of employees that can thrive in an organization and contribute to its success. Tickets are $50 and may be purchased on line at www.hhef.org or by calling 215-420-5261. Table sponsorships also are available. Parents and members of the community at large can meet Covey that evening at a reception at 6:30 p.m. at Simmons Elementary School, 411 Babylon Rd., Horsham, which precedes his address on, "The Leader in Me," at 7:30 p.m. in the school forum. Tickets for the reception and address are $10, free to students, and also may be purchased on line at www.hhef.org or by calling 215-420-5261. Covey, senior vice president of innovations and products at FranklinCovey, a world-renowned organization devoted to helping individuals, schools and businesses achieve greatness, is the author of several books including, "The 7 Habits of Happy Kids," being read by all third, fourth and fifth grade students in the Hatboro-Horsham School District, and "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens," read by all freshmen and sophomores. As part of a "One Book, One-School, One-Community" initiative, the Hatboro-Horsham Educational Foundation has made those books, as well as, "The Leader in Me," by Covey's father, Stephen R. Covey," available at the Hatboro Union Library and the Horsham Township Library. HHEF also purchased copies of "The 7 Habits of Happy Kids" for all third and fourth grade classrooms in the district. Covey will meet earlier in the day with teachers and administrators to discuss how 21st Century life skills like initiative, responsibility, self-direction, personal productivity, problem-solving, communication, collaboration and cross-cultural skills can be incorporated in the curriculum and reinforced at home. And he'll discuss with third and fourth grade students, and later with ninth grade students, how he personally uses the themes in the books they read and how these and the language in the books can be used at school and at home. Covey's message fits with the district's strategic plan to develop positive school climates, including social and personal responsibilities, according to Steve Glaize, principal at Hallowell Elementary School in Horsham, who worked with the foundation in spearheading the effort to bring Covey to the district. "We're teaching the whole child," said Glaize, " 'hard' skills like reading, writing, math and social studies and 'soft' skills involving cooperation, working on diverse teams and listening to others' opinions." The Hatboro-Horsham Educational Foundation is a nonprofit organization created to encourage excellence and to enhance and enrich educational opportunities offered to the students of the Hatboro-Horsham School District.
