Young@Heart Young@Heart Chorus of Seniors Over 73, Subject of Documentary Film, Bring Rock Classics to Horsham; Meet The Cast at a Dessert Reception

Hatboro-Horsham High School will rock 'n' roll with the music of Nirvana, Jimi Hendrix, Coldplay and others, but don't think it's just another school dance, concert by an upstart local band or fundraiser.

These musicians more resemble the grandparents of the school kids themselves and they're bringing their rockin' show to Horsham in a concert that has been wildly successful with fans of all ages worldwide.

The Young@Heart Chorus, made up of about two dozen seniors ages 73 to 88, performs at 3 p.m. Sunday Dec. 6 at the high school, 899 Horsham Rd., Horsham, an event sponsored by the Hatboro-Horsham Educational Foundation. In addition to the concert, other event happenings include:

  • Opening performance at 3 p.m. by the full Hatboro-Horsham High School Choir, including two pieces commissioned exclusively for the choir with the composer in attendance
  • Following the concert, a 5 p.m. meet-and-greet dessert reception with the stars of Young@Heart at the high school
  • Concert at that dessert reception by Hatboro-Horsham High School Choir alumni, paying tribute to long-time head of choir activities and department director William J. Naydan
  • Free screening of a documentary film about Young@Heart for students, parents and the general public at 7 p.m. Nov. 18 at the high school (tickets for the Dec. 6 concert will be on sale that night).
Founded in 1982 by residents of a housing project for the elderly in Northampton, Mass., Young@Heart has performed throughout the United States as well as in Europe and Australia. Last year, it was the subject of a documentary film telling its story and following it through rehearsals and gigs, like the 90-minute "Alive and Well" show coming to Horsham.

Dora Morrow and Stan Goldman shake it up during a performance of the Young@Heart Chorus. The group, which requires members be at least 73 years old, bridges the generation gap with its music. "Finding the ZEN in Senior Citizen" is how it touts itself. Publications like Time magazine (June 2005) have noticed: "These gyrating geriatrics travel around the world beating out rock classics and garnering rave reviews."

The Young@Heart concert kicks off with a performance by the Hatboro-Horsham High School Choir, performing songs written and arranged by Michael Larkin of Delaware. Naydan commissioned the work with an Innovative Learning Grant from the Hatboro-Horsham Educational Foundation. Larkin will be in attendance for the performance of his "Ose Shalom" and "If Music Be the Food of Love."

Larkin, who also wrote a piece for the school's madrigal ensemble, is to hold a one-day workshop with choir students the week before the concert.

At the dessert reception following the Dec. 6 concert, alumni of the Hatboro-Horsham High School Choir will perform in tribute to Naydan, a teacher for 28 years; the last 18 have been at Hatboro-Horsham High School. Anyone wishing to join the informal performance is invited to attend the concert and reception. Special pricing (see below) is available For additional information, contact Naydan at wnaydan@hatboro-horsham.org or HHEF Alumni Liaison Patty Burger at Patty_Burger@hotmail.com.

Naydan, a North Wales resident, has been director of choir activities since 1991 and department head since 1999. He was named this year to the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association's Hall of Fame. In 2002, he was a semi-finalist for Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year.

"I am very humbled by the honor," he said of the Dec. 6 tribute. "I hope to see many of the students at the event."

The 5 p.m. reception also features a number of vendors offering dessert samples. "Attendees will travel from vendor station to vendor station and receive a sticker to put on a 'scorecard' for entry in a raffle," said Patricia McGlinchy, HHEF board member. She said vendor gift cards, coupons and cooking classes could be among the prizes awarded.

The documentary, from Fox Searchlight by British director Stephen Walker, was released in spring 2008. David Ansen of Newsweek magazine wrote of the documentary: "A crowd-pleaser in the best sense, this alternately hilarious and heartbreaking movie will send you out of the theater with a new lease on life."

Tickets for the Young@Heart and the high school choir performance are $20; students are free. The reception is $15. A discounted combined price of $30 for the concert and reception is available to alumni and to groups of 20 or more through Nov. 25.

For additional information and to order tickets, visit www.hhef.org or call HHEF at 215-420-5261.

The Hatboro-Horsham Educational Foundation is a nonprofit organization created to encourage excellence and to enhance and enrich educational opportunities offered to the students of the Hatboro-Horsham School District.
