Area residents won't have to drive to the shore for a beach party Aug. 7. First Friday Hatboro is bringing it to the borough's business district.
Presented by the Greater Hatboro Chamber of Commerce and hosted by the merchants in downtown Hatboro, First Friday Hatboro is a celebration of the arts that offers free entertainment and activities for the whole family the first Friday of every month, rain or shine, from 6 to 9 p.m. Gold and black flags designate the businesses that are hosting an event. Getting in on August's "beach party" theme with special decorations, free leis and light refreshments, is IMPACT THRIFT STORES, 14 E. Moreland Ave., which will feature "ZOSER", A ONE-MAN STEEL BAND, from 6 to 8 p.m. A DOG'S LIFE (AND A CAT'S TOO!) pet boutique, 109 N. York Road, is hosting A LUAU, complete with tropical drinks and fruit and a WAGS pet rescue. For a small donation, photos (of pets or their human companions) will be taken in a beach scene, the photo provided and e-mailed as well.The beach party will continue at the KIDZ KLUB TOY STORE, 19 S. York Road, where youngsters will find a "SUPER-DUPER KIDZ KRAFT TABLE" where they can try sand art and can paint, draw, color, and decorate unique gift items. Those stopping by also can decorate a new guest mural. Anyone bringing beach towels or flip flops will get special discounts on the merchandise. Face-painting also will be available. In the center of town, "STONE AGE" will perform favorites from the '60s, '70s and '80s at MCMACKIN TIRE CENTER, York Road and W. Moreland Ave., and up the street at Hatboro Baptist Church, 32 N. York Road, The Heavenly Brew Café will present the Christian rock band "Cross Roads". JACK & BRENDA, an acoustic duo performing folk/rock music, will be the guests of THIS N THAT GIFT SHOPPE at 31 South York Road, which will offer 20 percent off beach and nautical items. MAIN STREET RECORDS, 11 S.York Road, will offer an "ALL AGES ROCK SHOW," including, among other groups, area bands "SINATRAH (HARD ROCK/PUNK) and ZINC PONY (ROCK). PRIMER Microstudio, 15 Byberry Road, will host a reception for MARIE DESMARAIS, an artist, jewelry maker and teacher from the East Kensington section of Philadelphia, whose mixed media collection will be on exhibit through Aug. 31. DesMarais's work is composed of whimsical forms and colors that combine with found materials such as maps, fabric, wood and glass to create landscapes that mimic both aerial views and microscopic images and parallel the interaction between man and nature. A graduate of Temple University's Tyler School of Art, DesMarais has been exhibiting throughout Philadelphia, recently at the Proximity and Bambi Galleries as well as at the Trenton Avenue Arts Festival, the Memphis Flats and North Bowl.
